Her smile warmed me. “I like that. You know, you’re really good at this when you try.” Her eyes narrowed like she was trying to figure me out.
“It’s not that I can’t do the work, Clara. I’ve just got too much on my mind with everything going on around me to concentrate on work.”
“You just need something to help you focus your energy, and you’ll be fine.”
“I was hoping that something could be someone; you.” She turned her head and was just a breath away from me. All it would have taken was just a little nudge to kiss her. She turned as I moved forward and I stopped short of kissing her ear.
“What are you doing?” She giggled, as I planted my nose in her hair and breathed.
“You smell good.”
“Thanks.” She blushed. “You smell good too.”
For a few moments, I felt like that stupid pudgy kid again. The one who’d wanted someone to like me so bad that it hurt. Why didn’t she like me? Any other girl would have already been on her back for me, and I was stalling out halfway to first base with Clara.
